How to Assign Scarce Resources Without Money: Designing Information Systems that are Efficient, Truthful, and (Pretty) Fair

چکیده
Matching with preferences has great potential to coordinate the efficient allocation of scarce resources in organizations when monetary transfers are not available. It is well known that it impossible combine all three properties truthfulness, efficiency, and fairness (i.e., envy freeness) matching preferences. Established mechanisms either or free, efficiency loss envy-free substantial. We focus on a widespread representative problem: course assignment where students have for courses organizers priorities over students. An important feature maximum capacity minimum required quota. This also requirement many other applications, such as school choice, hospital-residents matching, workers jobs. introduce RESPCT, mechanism respects quotas truthful, efficient, low levels envy. The reduction significant due two remarkably effective heuristics. provide analytical experimental results based field data from large-scale application. These led policy change proposed system now being used match hundreds every semester.

Truthful Combinatorial Assignment without Money
Mechanism design with agents who do not have quasi-linear preferences is an important line of research in social choice theory. Finding domains which admit truthful mechanisms is of central importance, particularly due to the well known impossibility result by Gibbard and Satterthwaite. In this paper we introduce a general framework for combinatorial assignments without money but with public va...
متن کاملWhat to Verify for Optimal Truthful Mechanisms without Money
We aim at identifying a minimal set of conditions under which algorithms with good approximation guarantees are truthful without money. In line with recent literature, we wish to express such a set via verification assumptions, i.e., kind of agents’ misbehavior that can be made impossible by the designer. We initiate this research endeavour for the paradigmatic problem in approximate mechanism ...
متن کاملHow to Evaluate Health Information Systems: Evaluation stages
The most important goal of health systems is improvement of quality, effectiveness and efficiency of health services. To achieve this goal, health care organizations should establish a proper structure for evaluating health information systems. Health information system evaluation is expected to identify the existing problems of the system through measuring specific indicators. The main objecti...
متن کاملTruthful Mechanisms without Money for Non-Utilitarian Heterogeneous Facility Location
In this paper, we consider the facility location problem under a novel model recently proposed in the literature, which combines the no-money constraint (i.e. the impossibility to employ monetary transfers between the mechanism and the agents) with the presence of heterogeneous facilities, i.e. facilities serving different purposes. Agents thus have a significantly different cost model w.r.t. t...
متن کاملTruthful Mechanism Design without Money: No Upward Bidding
Gibbard-Satterthwaite (G-S) theorem rules out the existence of any truthful, non-dictatorial and unanimous social choice function whose range comprises three or more alternatives. To circumvent the G-S impossibility, researchers have introduced restricted domains with additional assumptions to admit truthful mechanisms. We follow this line of research and look at a setting in which a set of ite...
